The Cover Is Not The Book: Disney and Rob Marshall’s “Mary Poppins Returns”

As they walked out of the theatre, Hazel was still humming the repetitive melody to “Trip A Little Light Fantastic,” her feet tapping along like the dancers in the film. Her wide grin was a contrast to the more stoic, contemplative look her older sister held as they returned to the parking lot.

“What did you think of the movie, Hazel?” Gwen prompted.

“I loved it!” Hazel shouted. Gwen put a finger to her lips, and Hazel’s head dropped slightly. “Oops,” she whispered. “Sorry.”

“I love this!” Dania said, pointing at the kaleidoscopic credits sequence that twirled across the screen. “All the animated stuff in the movie was really good.”

“Was there a lot of animated stuff?” Gwen asked.

“The phone sequence!” Eleanor said. “With everyone sending texts about Rachel. That was filmed fantastically. Such a good use of the medium. And the cut back to Rachel and Nick in the bar is perfect!

“Oh, that’s how you spell Awkwafina,” Dania said, as the actress’ name flashed onto the screen.

Dania’s mind was racing at high-octane speed as she exited the theater. Visions of dark matter swirling around Storm Reid as she vaulted through otherworldly planets merged with her acute vision of what she had envisioned when reading the same scene on the page. It was a close approximation, though not perfect. She would do her best, in the coming weeks, not to lose her original vision of the novel.

“Holy cow,” Gwen said, gripping her coat as they passed though the front door of the building. “That was weird.”
