Blinding Light: Audre Lorde’s “Sister Outsider”

Their timelines on social media had returned to normal in the last week, with less and less content that showed evidence of the great civil rights struggle still ongoing in the country. Videos of protesters clashing with police had been replaced with more pointed action items about donating to charities and petitioning for legislation. A series of surprise Supreme Court victories had given the country the momentary breath of hope that things weren’t entirely doomed, which only distracted from the fact that things very much still were.

Eleanor had gotten used to the dread that came with each notification on her phone –– keeping up with the news had drained her, but out of a maligned sense of civic responsibility, she continued to do so. Of course, every now and then, the clouds parted and gave her respite to discuss something more enjoyable.

“Ten years since what?” Gwen asked.

“This music video is ten years old now!”

Dania’s mind was racing at high-octane speed as she exited the theater. Visions of dark matter swirling around Storm Reid as she vaulted through otherworldly planets merged with her acute vision of what she had envisioned when reading the same scene on the page. It was a close approximation, though not perfect. She would do her best, in the coming weeks, not to lose her original vision of the novel.

“Holy cow,” Gwen said, gripping her coat as they passed though the front door of the building. “That was weird.”

Dania awoke groggily, glancing up at the clock.

She groaned. She was working from home this afternoon, but had planned to start at 9am. Now, needing to get dressed, eat breakfast, focus herself…she mentally adjusted her schedule and drooped her way to the kitchen.
