“But why ‘Viva La Vida?'” asked Gwen, as they exited the Prop Thtr’s claustrophilic theatre space. An instrumental cover of the song had played during the play’s final moments.

“Why not Viva La Vida?” Dania asked, with a grin. “They were playing current pop songs before the show started, it’s clearly not going for an accurate time period setting.”

“Do you mean in the design or in the aesthetic generally?” Eleanor asked. “Because the design was pretty classical, to a point.”

“Well, I mean,” Dania began, with a shrug. “Mr. Evil Voice had his big red monk robe, that was pretty accurate to the time period. As far as I know.”

Where We Were: Barack Obama’s “Dreams From My Father”

It had been – yet again – a vitriolic week of news coverage. It was enough to keep Dania away from social media for a time. “It’s for my health,” she explained in her Facebook post. Besides, she thought, I wanted to read more in 2018 anyway.

So when Gwen suggested that she read “Dreams From My Father,” Barack Obama’s 1995 memoir about his search for his heritage, Dania was hesitant.

“Gwen, I’m getting off-line to get away from politics,” she said. “I know Obama is bae, but I just…don’t, right now.”

“Because everything’s political nowadays, you know? Like, everyone. You gotta have your answers about where you stand on every issue just, at the ready. So I’d want to know.”

Dania stirred her tea slowly, considering Eleanor’s answer. “But why her?”

“Why not her?”

“I’m not saying she wouldn’t have an answer,” Dania continued, guardedly. “But of all the people to ask, it seems an odd choice.”
